ChineseNewYearstartswiththeNewMoononthefirstdayofthenewyearandendsonthefullmoon15dayslater.The15thdayofthenewyearis
calledtheLanternFestival,whichis
celebratedatnightwithlanterndisplaysandchildrencarryinglanternsinaparade.
TheChinesecalendarisbasedonacombinationoflunarandsolar
movements.Thelunarcycleisabout29.5days.Inorderto"catchup"withthesolarcalendartheChineseinsertanextra
monthonceeveryfewyearssevenyearsoutofa19-yearcycle.Thisisthesameasaddinganextradayonleapyear.Thisiswhy,accordingtothesolarcalendar,theChineseNewYearfallsonadifferentdateeachyear.
NewYear'sEveandNewYear'sDayarecelebratedasafamilyaffair,atimeofreunionandthanksgiving.Thecelebrationwastraditionallyhighlightedwithareligiousceremonygiveninhonor
