I am Greek, and my family go to Greece every summer. Uncle Spyro and
Aunt Aspa lived about 45 minutes outside of Athens. Every summer when we
travelled to Greece, we would spend a couple of days with them.
I remember all the fun things we would do there. We would shake almonds
(杏仁) off of the branches of Uncle Spyro's almond trees. Using his strong arms, he
would break the shells off, and present us with the shiny white nut. With Aunt Aspa
we would pick lemons off her lemon trees and carry them inside the small house
with the help of Uncle Spyro. Drinking the fresh lemonade and eating the delicious
almonds, we would sit on the porch and talk. Uncle Spyro and Aunt Aspa didn't
speak English, and my Greek wasn't and still isn't perfect. But those peacefully
quiet time on the porch were the time that I miss most.
Uncle Spyro developed cancer from smoke for most of his life and he
became very sick. We didn't go to Greece in 2009, but we planned on going again
in 2010. But just in the late spring of 2010, we found out that Uncle Spyro was in
the hospital shortly before we left for Greece. My mother, Alethea, and I wanted to
see him. But he passed away before we could get there. We were deeply grieved to
hear the news. Now, I wish that we had seen him for the last time. But my uncle
didn't wait for us to go.
We still visit Aunt Aspa and we still pick almonds and lemons. We still drink
the fresh lemonade and eat the delicious almonds on the porch. But somehow the
lemonade isn't as fresh, and the almonds aren't as delicious as before.
I think I'm still here to comfort Aunt Aspa and that I'm still here to finish my
life. I'm not afraid of death any more like some people. And I know that when I do
die, I'll just be going up to Uncle Spyro, and we'll eat almonds and drink lemonade,
just like before.

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many from different countries.
Have a look in your bridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins ((来源)
of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or
potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to
your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is
the distance that food travels from the farmer's field to the person who buys the
food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumers.
Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn't
have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they
went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and
consumers
example, For disadvantages. some were there However, consumers.
could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get
food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all
over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or
tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because
they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets
85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses
imported material.
What is wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing
international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons.
First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries
and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more
pollution and more global (全球的)warming. In addition, food that travels a long
way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early
and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when
they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the
amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
31. What is called “food miles” according to this passage?
A. The origins of the food. B. The effects of long distances.
C. The journey from field to plate. D. Te disadvantages of imported food.
32. The underlined word “available” in Paragraph 2 most probably means
“__________”
A. easy to get B. not busy
C. willing to talk D. impossible to get
33. Some countries, like the United Arab Emirates, have to import most of their
food because of ________.
A. long distance B. difficult climates
C. fresh and tasty food D. modern technology
34. The writer uses the last paragraph mostly to encourage readers to
____________.
A. buy more local food B. increase international trade
C. travel long distances D. use imported material
35. This passage is mainly about _______________.
A. how local food travels from field to plate
B. what “food miles” is and its effects
C. how some countries import their food
D. where different kinds of food come from
C
Happiness is important for everyone. Most people want to be happy but few
know how to find happiness. Money and success don't bring lasting happiness.
Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness.
Some people believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to do anything
they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that
holding a high place in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not only
money, but also many other things which can't be bought by money. However,
other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness, nor is holding a
high place in the government. These people value(重视)their beliefs, or their
wisdom, or their health. They think these can make them happy.
Here are the ways to help you be happier.
The secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we
spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or
getting a good job that we don't enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple
pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, or
spending time with close friends. People who have close friends usually enjoy
happier and healthier lives.
The secret of happiness is also to be active. Many people go dancing or play
sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Besides, many people find happiness in helping other people. According to
studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful
things for other people. If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone.
You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to get food for an old
neighbour, or simply help around the house.
Now maybe you know how to find happiness.
36. Some people who hold a high place in the government think they can
_________.
A. do what they want to do at any time
B. enjoy health, which makes them work hard
C. take an active part in all kinds of activities everyday
D. get money and something they can't buy with money
37. _________ is NOT the simple life you can enjoy.
A. Worrying about the future B. Reading a good book
C. Staying with close friends D. Listening to one's favorite music
38. The writer thinks the secret of happiness is that people _________.
A. think about getting a good job B. often spend time with close friends
C. think of presents they don't like D. often spend time on entering the college
39. Many people find it happy to _________.
B. make much money and little progress
A. go shopping to get some food
C. remember the old days and trouble D. do some meaningful things for other people
40. The passage mainly tells us _________.
A. how to save happiness B. to value our beliefs or health
C. how to find happiness D. to do something good for other people

写作
In Guangzhou, more and more students begin to ride shared
bikes to school. We can see those bikes everywhere. Surely, they bring
us a lot of convenience in our daily life. Shared bikes are popular
among students for the following reasons. First, it's very convenient to
use the shared bikes. Students can unlock the shared bikes easily by
using their phones. Second, it's cheap to rent the shared bikes. Using
them for half an hour costs only 0.5 yuan.
However, there are some problems as well. On one hand, some
people park the bikes here and there. On the other hand, some people
damage the bikes on purpose or even steal the bikes.
In my opinion, people should learn how to use the shared bikes
properly in order to make our life easier and our city better.
