阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem inability to read.
In the library,I found my way into the "Children's Room." I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. Without opening the book—Amos, the Beagle with a Plan ,1 borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later ,she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

It was five years ago that something unforgettable happened. My wife and I celebrated our 40thwedding anniversary that year. It was a lovely event hosted by our sons for us. My wonderful friends from the past surprised us with gifts and congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove fromOntariointoAlberta, then southward intoGlacierNational ParkinMontana, and continued toYellowstoneNational Park.
It was a cold spring day, and theBeartooth Highwayhad opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens.
There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. As he approached us, his only words were, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most valuable and prized of our trip.
I learned my lesson somewhere I least expected it. We should never judge a man by his appearance. If the motorcycle driver reads this story and remembers the situation, we would like to say “Thank you” to him. 4. According to the passage, what do we know about the trip? A. It was taken by train to the west. B. It was a suggestion from their friends. C. It was in the late autumn five years ago. D. It was a gift for their wedding anniversary.
5. Why was the author nervous when the motorcycle driver offered to take a picture? A. He could have lost the camera.
B. His wife might not be satisfied with the view there. C. The motorcycle driver would borrow the camera.
D. The motorcycle driver might not be good at the taking pictures.

6. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle? A. Kind and straightforward. B. Rich and generous. C. Creative and capable. D. Careful and admirable. 7. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage? A. No pains, no gains. B. Seeing is believing.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
D. The longest journey begins with the first step.

Have you ever thrown a camel? Camels are large and heavy animals so it would be hard to throw. But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic ofthe Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake”.
In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people outside of France speak the language. The language has changed over time and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Cana-da, compared to how it is in Paris
A new online dictionary, called the French speakers’ dictionary, includes new French words from around the world. It was released on March 18—just in time for International French Speaker’s Day on March 20.
Supporters say the new Internet dictionary is more democratic than earlier French dictionaries that only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. The new dictionary includes unofficial words like “pourriel”, which means an unwanted email if you are in Canada. It is a word based on “courriel”, which just means an email.
French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the idea of the dictionary in 2018. It now contains about 600.000 terms, Roselyne Bachelot is the French Culture Minister. She said the dictionary is not just for France's 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.
The aim, supporters say, is to recognize the way language changes. Words and expressions included in the dictionary come from over 50 countries—even from the United States Some people in the southern U. S. state of Louisiana speak French.
People can see the dictionary on a website or with an app. Users can also send in new words they think should be included. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated.

8. What do we mean if we say a man “throws a camel” in French? A. He talks big. B. He is very strong. C. He makes a joke. D. He misspells a word.
9. What is the purpose of the publication date of the new online dictionary? A. To celebrate an event. B. To honor foreign users. C. To draw more attention. D. To meet an urgent need. 10. Where does the word “pourriel” come from?
A. French. B. An email. C. A holiday. D. Canada. 11. What can people do with the new dictionary?
A. Update it regularly. B. Recommend new words to it.
C. Change the meaning of its words. D. Regard it as an official dictionary.
D
California's August Complex Fire tore through more than 1,600 square miles of forest last summer, burning nearly every tree in its path. It was the largest wildfire in the state's recorded history, breaking the record previously set in 2018. After the fire, land managers must determine where to most efficiently plant new trees.
A predictive mapping model called the Postfire Spatial Conifer Restoration Planning Tool recently described in Ecological Applications could inform these decisions, saving time and expense. The tool can “show where young trees are needed most, where the forest isn't going to come back on its own, where we need to intervene(干预)if we want to maintain forests," says lead author Joseph Stewart, an ecologist at the University of California, Davis.
To develop the model, Stewart and his colleagues classified data collected from more than 1,200 study plots in 19 areas that burned between 2004 and 2012. They combined these data with information on rainfall, geography, climate, forest composition and bum severity.Theyalso included how many seeds sample conifer trees(针叶树)produced in 216locations over 18 years, assessing whether the trees release different numbers of seeds after a fire.
The tool's potential benefits are significant, says Kimberley Davis, a conservation scientist at theUniversityofMontana, who was not involved in the study. Those managers will still have to make hard decisions, such as which species to plant in areas that may experience warmer and drier conditions resulting from climate change, but the model provides some research-based guidance to help the forests recover. 12. What challenge do land managers face after the wildfire?

A. Lack of wood supplies. B. Where to plant new trees best. C. How to save the burned trees. D. Loss of trees and wild animals. 13. What's the main idea of paragraph 2? A. The function of the tool. B. The disadvantages of the tool. C. The improvement of the tool. D. The development of the tool.
14. What does the underlined word "They" refer to? A. The study plots. B. The data.
C. Stewart and his colleagues. D. The seeds. 15. What isDavis' attitude towards the tool? A. Skeptical. B. Ambiguous. C. Tolerant. D. Optimistic.

Perfectionists are often likely to start negative self-talk. If you catch yourself doing this, stop! Try using thought awareness to question your negative thoughts and add some positivity!
Focus on the bigger picture. Perfectionism can cause “tunnel vision”—when you focus on one small part of something but ignore the rest. You might, for instance, focus on getting a minor part of a presentation right, like the special effects, instead of concentrating on the meaning that you are trying to deliver. Remember to keep your
focus on the bigger picture.____19____
Relax and go with the flow. The pursuit of perfection can make it extremely difficult to relax. And perfectionists prefer to maintain focus and to stick to their carefully laid plans. And you’ll be better at keeping perfectionism under control if you’re feeling rested, clear-headed and happy.____20____Get outside, be open to new experiences and new people, make use of relaxation techniques, and recognize when you need to switch off.
Most of all, don’t allow perfectionism or fear of failure to stop you from experiencing new things. Be open to new ways of thinking, new people, and new experiences.
