however,asrapidlyasIcould,Ifounditimpossibletogetintotheclear.ThecloudswiththeirrainkeptadvancingfasterthanIcouldraceforward.Icontinuedthisunequalcontestforanexhaustinghalfhour,beforerealizingthatIcouldnotwinmywaytothebrightareaaheadofme.ThenitdawneduponmethatIwaswastingmystrengthinunimportanthurry,whilepayingnoattentionwhatsoevertothelandscapeforthesakeofwhichIwasmakingthetrip.Thestormcouldnotlastforeverandthediscomfortwasnotunendurable.Indeed,therewasmuchtolookatwhichmightotherwisehaveescapedme.AsIgazedaboutwithsharpenedappreciation,Isawcolorsandlinesandcontoursthatwouldhaveappeareddifferentlyunderbrilliantlight.Therainmistswhichnowcrownedthewoodedhillsandthefreshclearnessofthedifferentgreenswereentrancing.Myannoyanceattherainwasgoneandmyeagernesstoescapeitvanished.Ithadprovidedmewithanewviewandhelpedmeunderstandthatthesourcesofbeautyandsatisfactionmaybefoundcloseathandwithintherangeofone'sownsensibilities.Itmademethink,thenandlater,aboutothermatterstowhichthisincidentwasrelated.IthelpedmerealizethatthereisnosenseinmyattemptingevertofleefromcircumstancesandconditionswhichcannotbeavoidedbutwhichImightbravelymeetandfrequentlymendandoftenturntogoodaccount.IknowthathalfthebattleiswonifIcanfacetroublewithcourage,disappointmentwithspirit,andtriumphwithhumility.Ithasbecomeeverclearertomethatdangerisfarfromdisaster,thatdefeatmaybetheforerunneroffinalvictory,andthat,inthelastanalysis,allachievementisperilouslyfragileunlessbasedonenduringprinciplesofmoralconduct.
